4 part series to strengthen your relationship

Part 1: Communication: ‘I Feel’ vs ‘You Always’

Nurturing healthy relationships is essential for a fulfilling life. Effective communication techniques play a vital role in resolving relationship conflicts. When both partners understand each other’s needs and concerns, they can work together to strengthen their bond.

By adopting simple yet powerful communication strategies, couples can overcome challenges and build a more loving and supportive partnership. Understanding and empathy are key elements in resolving conflicts and creating a more harmonious relationship.

The Communication Gap in Relationships

Understanding the communication gap in relationships is crucial for their success. When couples struggle to convey their thoughts and feelings effectively, it can lead to relationship issues that seem insurmountable. Different communication styles often lead to misunderstandings. For instance, one partner might be more reserved, while the other is more expressive. This disparity can cause friction, as the more reserved partner might feel overwhelmed, while the expressive partner feels unheard.

The Impact of Poor Communication

Poor communication can have severe consequences on a relationship. As a result, it can lead to unresolved conflicts, relationship issues, and a buildup of resentment. Practicing effective communication is key to avoiding these pitfalls and fostering a healthier, more understanding relationship. However, by acknowledging the communication gap and making a conscious effort to bridge it, couples can work towards a more harmonious and fulfilling partnership.

“I Feel vs You Always”: The Communication Pattern That’s Killing Your Relationship

Couples often find themselves entangled in a web of miscommunication, where the phrases ‘I feel’ and ‘you always’ become pivotal in shaping their interactions. The way we express our feelings and concerns can either foster a deeper understanding or create a chasm between partners.

When we use “you always” statements, they often come across as accusations, placing blame on our partner. This can lead to defensiveness and escalate conflicts. For instance, saying “You always ignore me” can make the other person feel attacked, rather than encouraging them to listen to the concern.
Examples of accusatory statements include:
• “You never listen to me.”
• “You always do this.”
• “You never help.”

In contrast, “I feel” statements allow us to express our emotions without placing blame. This assertive communication technique helps in taking ownership of our feelings, making it easier for our partner to empathize. For example, saying “I feel ignored when you don’t respond to my messages” conveys the feeling without attacking the partner.

Why We Default to Blame

One of the primary reasons we default to defensive communication is the tendency to blame others for our problems. In fact, this blame-shifting behavior is often a coping mechanism, allowing us to avoid taking responsibility for our actions. By understanding this tendency, we can begin to address the root causes of our defensive behavior.

This self-protection mechanism is another key factor in defensive communication. When we feel vulnerable or attacked, our instinct is to protect ourselves, often by becoming defensive or dismissive. Recognizing this mechanism can help us develop more constructive communication strategies, focusing on empathy and understanding rather than self-protection.
Perhaps most significantly of all is keeping our partner’s past in mind. Many adults experienced difficult childhoods that included being blamed, yelled at or shamed. Although we recognize that as unhealthy, our natural tendency is to seek what is familiar and predictable. If this was your experience, you are likely find a partner that will participate in the same dynamic – one of you is more dominant and the other submissive. This system will need attention and intention to have a different outcome.

Impact on Problem-Solving

“You always” statements hinder effective problem-solving by shifting the focus from the issue to the person’s behavior. Instead of working together to find a solution, the conversation becomes about who’s right or wrong. Nobody ever wins when it becomes a power struggle, the relationship always suffers.

Ultimately, the power of “I feel” communication lies in its ability to foster empathy and understanding in relationships. By using “I feel” statements, individuals can express their emotions without placing blame or becoming confrontational. This method of communication, therefore, encourages a more personal and reflective approach to conversations, leading to more meaningful interactions. More importantly, it removes the need to declare a winner and a loser. The attention can stay with the problem at hand, rather than who can be most hurtful.

Communication is at the heart of every relationship, personal through professional. Understanding and allowing a balance of expressing yourself without attacking will take you a long way. Read more in our next blog on how to fight fair.
